Outdoor History Exploration Tour
Beijing – Zhuang – Lijiang – Dongba – Guilin – Kunming
China is full of many beautiful outdoor locations and hosts many interesting land formations, bodies of water, and mountainous regions. The Outdoor History Exploration Tour will take you through popular destinations in Beijing, to quaint countryside villages, along elegant rivers, to beautiful mountaintops.
After arriving in Beijing, you’ll take a guided tour of Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and you’ll also attend a Tea Ceremony at Bell Tower. The next day you’ll get to see the magnitude of The Great Wall of China from a gondola.
You will travel along the Lijiang River and take a tour by bicycle of a tiny Zhuang village, enjoying lunch with the local villagers.
In the Old Town of Lijiang, you’ll visit The Black Dragon Pool, a famous pond built in 1737 in the scenic Jade Spring Park. The park offers an amazing view of the region’s tallest mountain – the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Next you will explore villages and visit scenic vistas along the Yulong Snow Mountainside. In Dongba Village, you can feel the traditional atmosphere of national culture from the layout of its yards and buildings to the tools people use and the small details of daily life in the area.
You will also visit the Lijiang Mural. It is stored, preserved and displayed in 15 venerable temples, such as Juexian, Wande, Guiyi temples and Sanbi Garden. Altogether, the mural used to include more than 200 pieces of fresco. However, hundreds of years of historical vicissitudes have left only 55 pieces in good condition.
You will travel along the Lijian valley and see beautiful fields full of wheat and drying haystacks. After rafting to Longpan village, you’ll visit Tiger Leaping Gorge – the deepest gorge in the entire world. You will travel along the Jinsha River and Marble Trail, traversing three marbel tunnels.
After traveling to the Bitahai Lake, you’ll be able to explore the beautiful lake and dense forest, eventually arriving at the Songzanlin Monastery. which has a 300-year-old history and ranks as the most important in southwest China. Here you will get to know the culture characteristic of monastic architecture and the mural (Thangka) as well as the Buddhist scripture. You’ll see traditional Tibetan dances, sip on traditional butter tea, and see an enormous prayer wheel.
The trip will be complete after visiting the Kunming Ethnic Culture Village and staying in a local five star hotel before departing to Beijing and connecting back to the U.S.
Day 1 – Depart New York City for Beijing.
Day 2 – 18:20 Arrive in Beijing, meet the guide and transfer to 5* Hotel, Buffet Dinner at Hotel booked by CPT. (D)

Day 5 – Guilin Transfer to airport for morning flight to Guilin, meet the guide and check in at 5* Hotel. Half day tour of Fubo Hill, Cave Tour, Daxu Old Town. (BLD)
Day 6 – Today you will enjoy the Chinese Paint view – Lijiang River by cruise. On arrival, Evening Impression of Liu/SanJie Show. Overnight at Yangshuo. Hotel (BLD)
Day 7 – Half day bicycle tour of Minority village, lunch with villagers (Miao/Zhuang). Drive to Guilin airport after lunch, take the later afternoon flight to Lijiang, transfer in Kunming, meet the guide ate the airport and check in to the 5* hotel, buffet dinner at hotel. (BLD)
Day 8 – Full day tour in Lijiang old town and Black Dragon Pool (heilongtan). Suhe old town (BLD)
Day 9 – You will be picked up from your hotel then start the tour. Today we will depart to Yulong Snow Mountain. It is the southernmost marine glacier in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere. Altogether there are 13 peaks along the range, stretching for over 35km from south to north. The summit, Shanzidou, is 5596 meters above sea level. Viewed from afar, the snow-capped range resembles a silver dragon with snow curling up its middle. Rich forest, herb and animal resources thrive on the mountain. Enjoy Lijiang Impressions Show in the afternoon at Yulong Snow Mountain. On our way we will stop at Dongba Village in Yushui Stockade, which is built completely according to the traditional life style of Naxi Minority. You can feel the traditional atmosphere of national culture from the layout of its yard, building facilities, tools and details of life.
Then you will see invaluable Lijiang Mural. It is stored, preserved and displayed in 15 venerable temples, such as Juexian, Wande, Guiyi temples and Sanbi Garden. Altogether, the mural used to include more than 200 pieces of fresco. However, hundreds of years of historical vicissitudes have left only 55 pieces in good condition. The most famous frescos are known as Baisha Mural of the Dabaoji (Great Treasure) Palace and the Colored Glaze Temple (Liuli Dian) in the town of Baisha. Day 10 – Pick up you in the hotel and drive about 60KM to the First Bend on the Yangtze River with imposing gorge scenery, and the Iron Chain Bridge in the Stone Drum town. The town of Stone Drum got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum. The scenery is magnificent as the road running through the Lijiang valley which is filled with wheat fields and drying haystacks. In the First Bend of Yangtze River, you will have an optional rafting tour to Longpan Village. This is a very special experience rafting in the upper Yangtze River.
Continue the driving 40KM more to visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. With 34 rapids of the Yangtze River, it is called the Jinsha in this area because you can find gold in the river. In the upper part of Tiger Leaping Gorge, you will walk about 2.6Km from the entrance to Tiger Leaping Rock. It is a nice walking along the Jinsha River and Marble trail. You will walk through three marble tunnel s in the gorge. If someone is tired, you can take the rickshaw, 40Yuan per person for the single trip. Returning to the main road and continue through pastoral scenery of wheat fields to Gyalthang, set at 10,800 feet in the eastern Tibetan highlands. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and forests of pine and spruce, the historic trading town of Gyalthang is the capital of China’s Dechen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. In centuries past, it was a stopover on the tea caravan route between Yunnan and Tibet. Today it is still the heartland of the Khampa Tibetans, with their age-old traditions as swashbuckling horsemen and caravan traders. Continue driving to Shangri-la and check-in to the 5*hotel (BLD)
Day 11 – Make a morning excursion to Bitahai Lake, about 25 km east from Shangri-La County. Here optional pony trip can be taken to go through a pretty forest and down to the lake. Your eyes will be feasted with a pagoda-like hill and the surrounding trees with their reflection on the tranquil lake. The next stop is clear Shudu Lake embraced by the dense forests. The lakeshore is a pasture for herds of cows and sheep. Tibetan farm touch can be experienced here. Continue the tour to Songzanlin Monastery which has a 300-year-old history and ranks as the most important in southwest China. Here you will get to know the culture characteristic of monastic architecture and the mural (Thangka) as well as the Buddhist scripture. Meanwhile, you can also get chance to chat and sip Tibetan butter tea with living Buddha in the monastery. Heavy Tibet touch can be found in the Square Street of 1,300-year old town with the Tibetan medicines, yak goods, the Tibetan dance in the square, the giant wheel prayer, etc. White stupas can be seen everywhere and Scripture Chamber hidden within the old town originally was constructed for commemorating the Red Army. And a commanding view of the town district is available on the nearby Guishan Park.
